2026 Workshop on “Grey Space Designs for Sustaining Tropical Architecture” in Bangkok, Thailand
Led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Martin Schoch, ARC lecturer at the School of Architecture and Design, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (SoA+D–KMUTT), in collaboration with Prof. Yiqiang Xiao and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yin Shi, both lecturers at the School of Architecture, South China University of Technology (SCUT), China.
The workshop ran from January 10 to 18, 2026, at KMUTT Bangkhunthian and Samut Sakhon.
The theme, “Grey Space Designs for Sustaining Tropical Architecture,” explored how architecture can be critically assessed through the experience and simulation of environmental conditions, coupled with narrative reflections on tropical living. The pedagogical approach emphasized the integration of theory and practice, where students engaged in collaborative design exercises to gain a deeper understanding of the resilience and sustainability of tropical architecture.
The workshop was designed not only as an academic event but also as a platform to explore future avenues of collaboration. By bringing together students and faculty from SCUT and SoA+D, the workshop served as both a learning environment and a testing ground for deeper joint initiatives, thereby enhancing SoA+D’s international academic network.
