This course introduces students to digital design as an integral component of architectural thinking, representation, and making. Designed for students with little or no prior experience in digital tools, the course focuses on the transition from hand-based methods to structured digital workflows appropriate to early-stage architectural education.
Students develop foundational skills in two-dimensional drafting and three-dimensional computer modeling, enabling the translation of sketches, diagrams, and physical concepts into accurate digital representations. Through a sequence of guided exercises and design-based tasks, students engage with fundamental architectural principles including geometry, scale, proportion, spatial organization, and material awareness.
The course introduces digital fabrication techniques such as laser cutting and 3D printing, allowing students to materialise digital models. Emphasis is placed on understanding the relationship between digital representation, fabrication constraints, and material outcomes, reinforcing the connection between design intent and construction logic.
In addition to technical competence, the course cultivates logical, procedural, and computational modes of thinking. Students learn to structure design processes through clear, step-by-step operations, establishing a conceptual foundation for parametric design and scripting methodologies encountered in later stages of architectural education.
