AUGMENTED CRAFT

Brief background:
Augmented Craft is a steam-bent rattan pavilion in which rattan members are shaped and assembled with Mixed Reality guidance to form a spatial, curved network, demonstrating how established crafting processes and materials can work in dialogue with contemporary guidance tools. Mixed Reality-assisted making, understood here as a form of augmented craft, couples manual fabrication with precise in-space digital references. Using head-mounted displays, fabricators read holographic lines and markers to position adjustable bending forms and check parts and geometry during assembly. Steam-bent rattan, commonly used in furniture, is deployed here at an architectural scale, enabling traditional bending techniques to extend to larger spans and more complex spatial configurations without abandoning workshop practices. The pavilion is designed by Studio Igor Pantic Ltd. and developed in collaboration with School of Architecture and Design, Faculty of Engineering and Institute of Field Robotics, King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (SoA+D, KMUTT).
