Project : Depressive Treatment Center

Thesis Advisor : Asst. Prof. Supawadee Boonyachut

Society has changed from the past. Having a mental health problem is not a secret and weird issue to hide from the others and it has become a crucial issue for Thailand. However, the few number of the psychiatry hospitals for depressive patients in Thailand cannot support the increasing number of patients. The site is in Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute (CNMI) in Samut Prakan, Thailand. The site location is an empty area for medical service expansion. The concept of this project is ‘Rebirth’ which comes from the depressive patients who want to maintain connectedness to the outside world.  When the patients go to the hospital, that is a signal of the rebirth. The rebirth is not only in the design, but also in the treatment. The project provides the treatment and therapy through the space and element, and encourage the patient’s interaction with the doctor, therapist and the other patients by providing the activities and gathering space for the patients.

Background: Problem

Depression is a common and serious medical illness that affects how you feel, the way you think and how you act. Depression causes feelings of sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities. It can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems and can decrease a person’s ability to function at work and at home. Moreover, the state of the impact also affects themselves, their family, society, and country in the end.

The number of depressive patients increases according to the depressive patients statistic in Thailand. However, the number of healthcare and hospitals are not enough to support the increasing number of the depressive patients. Moreover, the healthcare and hospitals do not have suitable facilities and service for the patients. Therefore, the depression treatment center will become the center that supports the patients from the beginning to the end to get better by not only using medicine, but also doing activities where the patients can relax and improve their mental health.

Target User

The target user of the project is the depressive patients who lived in Samut Prakhan province and also includes the patients in Eastern Thailand. These are Rayong, Trat, Chanthaburi, Chonburi, Sa Kaeo, Chachoengsao and Prachinburi. The patients are all ages from kids, teenagers, adults and elders.

Kid – They cannot express their feeling and explain their feeling to others well.  Therefore, they will be frustrated, angry and blame themselves about uncommunication.

Teenager – They try to separate and live alone and not socialize.

Adult – the bored or no proud routine activities is a cause of depression in adults.

Elder – the patients in the group are depressed because of less activities. The cause can be retirement or physical condition.

Site location

Samut Prakran province has more private hospitals than public hospitals. There are 19 private hospital, while there are only 10 public hospitals. The lesser number of public hospitals cause people to go to the private hospital, but the treatment cost in them is more expensive. The background and occupation of people in Samut Prakran province and Eastern Thailand are mostly working in industrial factories with low salary so they cannot afford the treatment in the private hospitals.

Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute (CNMI) is located in Samut Prakan province. The hospital is a public hospital organized by the Ramathibodi Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand. The objectives of the hospital are developing quality of people in Samut Prakran province and Eastern Thailand and giving the treatment for all people. Moreover, the hospital is for researching more new medical technology and upcoming health problem in the future. The objectives of the hospital match to the objectives of the thesis, which are to treat increased depressive patients, acknowledge that the rate of depression is growing and find alternative treatment for them.

The site is in Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute (CNMI) in Samut Prakan. The site location is next to the hospital main building. The location is an empty area to support the medicine service in the future. The location has the greenery atmosphere that is good for mental health of the patients.

Thesis Question

“How to create an architecture to treat the depressive patients to get better by not using only medicine?”

Design Concept

The design concept starts from the depressive hospital which is a place for recovery of the patient’s hope. The depressive patient’s hope marks a new beginning. The depressive hospital should help maintain connectedness to the outside world. When the patients stay in the hospital, it is a signal of the new beginning. The form of the building is from the concept of rebirth and distorted tree into a Y shape and developed the Y shape with the building program into the final form.

Facade design and Color selection

This pattern of wallpaper is anti-depression wallpaper that use round shapes angled upward that create the sense of stability and endurance that is good for the depressive who has unstable emotion and it can decrease depression and stress of patients. (Ref:Danielle Ouellete & National Alliance on Mental health)

Green is a calm and relaxing color that creates a natural atmosphere, decreasing the stress and balances their emotion. The brightness of yellow creates a lively atmosphere that helps to decrease the depression.

Used yellow color for the public space in treatment and IPD zones because the space is for doing activities between doctor, therapist and patient. The patient can feel lively and cheerful during the activities.

Used green color as floor’s room in IPD ward. The green color makes the patients calm and has stable emotion when they spend their time in their room.

Green area

The green area in the building can give healing experience for patients, staff and visitors. The green area creates natural therapy, especially the depressive patients.

The type of tree in the building is important because it can be the risk to the patients. The tree in the building should have no toxic and thorn that are dangerous for the patients. The aromatic smell is good for the patients to feel relaxing and calm. Moreover, the texture in the garden can stimulate the learning. They can experience and feel more textures that helps healing too.

Safety

Safety is the first priority in the building. It requires safety in the process of installation and usage.

No balcony: Each patient’s room in IPD zone has no balcony to avoid the risk of suicide. Providing service walkway for glass cleaning and service of the air compressor. The façade pattern also uses the treatment pattern similar to the wallpaper.

Installation: The installation of the panel to structure should be building exterior to the outside corridor to prevent danger to the patient. Patients playing with the structural element can cause danger.

Façade and railling: The façade and railing pattern has different sizes for different purposes. The exterior panel is the largest void pattern to keep the building characteristic and used as a treatment pattern. The interior panel is the smallest void pattern for privacy of the patients. The medium size void pattern is used as a component of the railing. The railing height and the bottom of railing made of wood plastic composite are for preventing climbing and suicide.

Detail

The roof design is the flat slab connect with the lean to roof and double roof, slope roof over flat slab, to prevent heat gain in slab and drain rainwater faster on the large surface.
