Asst. Prof. Sunaree Lawanyawatna

Short Description

Sunaree Lawanyawatna is an Assistant Professor at the School for Architecture and Design at the King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi in Thailand. She specializes in teaching architectural design courses and conducting research at the “Humanitarian Design Laboratory.” With a Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, she furthered her education with a Master of Architecture from Pratt Institute, New York, USA, and a Master of Science in Urban Design from the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, USA. Her expertise has led her to be a guest speaker at various universities across Thailand, Taiwan, Cambodia, and Japan. Additionally, Sunaree is a licensed architect with professional experience in the United States, Germany, and Thailand. In addition to her academic role, she serves as the Design Director and an Associate at Unexpected Co., Ltd, an architectural design firm in Bangkok, Thailand.

Recent Practice or Research

2020-2024  Develop guidelines and certification standards for constructing green buildings (residential and commercial) in Cambodia. These guidelines and certification process would be based on international experience and international standards such as green building indices or rating systems (LEED, LOTUS (Vietnam), or Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (EDGE) supported by International Finance Corporation (IFC) adapted to the context of Cambodia.

2022-2023 Research funding from Thailand Science Research and Innovation (TSRI) for the project “Decoding Contemporary Thai Architecture” – Grey Space in Architecture: Exploring its Meaning and Application in Thai Educational Buildings, Basic Research Fund: The fiscal year 2022  under project number FRB 650048/0164

2022-2020 Research funding from the National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) for the Acute Respiratory Infection Clinic (ARI) screening station design project suitable for an outdoor extension facility, design and build for a public hospital located at the Thai-Myanmar Border in Mahongsorn Province.

2020 Research project and prototyping for the design conversion of an existing public phone booth to a COVID-19 Screening Station. With project funding by National Telecom Public Company Limited, the design has been reached out and installed for 14 healthcare facilities in Thailand.

2017-2019 Studio design project in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) for a project “Future Prison Design in Thailand” based on “Mandela Rules.”

2017 Pilot Project with Pruksa PLC for sustainable single-family housing. The project named “Pruksa Energy Plus House” was certified and awarded the Platinum Award in 2017 from the DGNB (German Sustainable Building Council)
